Borough Finances.
THE MAYOR’S STATEMENT CRITICISED. TO Tire EDITOK OF THIS JJiNAWATH EERILB. Sir,—The Mayor’s figures as regard* the borough financial position when he took office are very misleading, and I would ask you to kindly republish the statement made by me when vacating the Mayoral chair in favour of the incoming Mayor.—l am, etc., P. Hennessy. (From “ Manawatu Herald,” May 17th, 1904.) The retiring Mayor Fat the previous evening’s meeting.—Eb.] in vacating the chair made a statement of the financial position of the borough. When he took office in December last there was a credit balance of £307 3* 4d. and on March 31st, 1904, there was still a balance of £174 2s yd to the credit of the. general fund. As the council was aware the amount on h&nd when he took office had to be nursed to meet' the usual monthly payments in order that the accounts should not be overdrawn on 31st March, and the figures would speak for thenuelve*. The balance in hand on March 31st last, with the incoming revenue for the present year, amounting to £1026, would leave £I2OO available for the current year’s expenditure.
