School Committee Election.
TO-NIGHT. Householders are reminded that the annual meeting for the election of a school committee will be held at 8 o’clock to night, in the school room. It is hoped that in view of the importance of tne matter, seeing that it concerns the welfare of the children, there will he a large attendance, and that ladies wtll make it a point to be present. Seating accommodation will be provided specially for ladies, and it is well to note that in a household husband and wife each have a righi to vote* as some people have been under the impression that only one could vote, which is erroneous.
OUTGOING COMMITTEE’S REPORT,
The chairman (Mr A. D. Clemett) of the outgoing cofdmittee will report as follows on the year's work I have to report tnat the past year hds been one of the most successful in the history of (he comniittee. Every thing undertaken has been parried out as far a? possible. The prind!J? a l items are i—The posting of circulars f to 'ho committee? in adjacent dlslrlcfg urging then! to join with ds 111 tin effort to get the Government to form a new education district with a centre at Palmerston so as to curtail the present nnwelldy Wellington and Wanganui Boards. This failed owing to but few of the committee responding. The committee after a great deal of perseverance has had largeSimprovements made. The eastern room has been divided into two class rooms. The infant room has been refloored and re blocked) the old gallery removed and dual desks placed there; Tlie Western room has been refloored and reblocked I may state that the committee went so far as to obtain a Government health officer to inspect the school before the board would do the work. Repairs of considerable importance have been made to fences, school, tanks, outbuilding etc. A grant of £8 has been obtained from the Education Board being £ for £ up to £l6 for the erection a new shelter shed for boys to replace the old one. The contract is let to Mr Andrew Jonson for the sum of £l6 5s and will he done next month. The committee appointed Messrs Geo. Coley, and W. S. Stewart to obtain subscriptions to cover the amount required above the grant from board. This has been over given and the balance will he used to replenish the committee’s empty till for other needs. The long needed wood and cold depot is to be made out of the old shelter shed and stands for the children’s saddles will also be fitted there. Mr Johson is also entrusted with this work. The committee made an effort to run an excursion train to Woodville, but failed owing to the parents not joining with the committee in covering the large bond of £2B required by the Railway Department. The last and crowning feature of the year, after repeated and determined efforts, is the election of Mr Alf. Fraser upon the Education Board at Wanganui, which speaks tor itself. The teaching staff consists of the following teachersW. S. Stewart, head master; L. Furrie, assistant master; Miss McDonough, assistant mistress; Miss Wanklyn, assistant; L. Jenks, pupil teacher; Miss Rodgers, pupil teacher. At the annual examination in September splendid passes were obtained, and the committee highly commended Mr Stewart and hE staff upon the results. Prizes were given to the boys and girls who passed highest in each standard and a gift to each of the little ones. Mr Bradcock collected the sum of £9 5a for this purpose.
