The Shannon Road Bridge.

MR VILE IN EXPLANATION. TO TEE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU MSRAIV S IR) —Your Moutoa correspondent, I should say, is not quit* correct in bie facta when he says that the sitting member for Manawatu ha* dons able* lately nothing towards furthering the scheme of the Shannon ferry bridge erection. Let me sav in vindication of the aspersion, that I have written to Ministers from outside the House of representatives pointing out the necessity of the work, and within the Homo of Representatives I have done all I can do—short of having control of the colony’s purse strings—to get this bridge subsidised so that the local bodies interested should be enabled to proceed with the work; but without avail. The district is entitled to have the subsidy. The Manawatu elector, ate is entitled to the money, and a very great deal more; but in the meantimo Manawatu’* fair share of public expea* diture is now being used, and has been for years past, in promoting unjust (unjust so far as other parts of the colony are concerned) expenditure oa the West Coast of the other Island. I purpose giving a pre scssional address shortly in Foxton, when I shall explain matters in this connection more fully. —I am, etc., J. Vile.
