King Edward and Queen Alexandra, \vlio are touring in the Mediterranean in trio Royal yacht, received an ovation at Algiers/ Sergeant of the Bisley rifle team, who hag been residing in Palmerston for some months past, left yesterday for Wellington. The learn sails on April 28th in the Corinthic?. The vacancy caused by the resignation ot Miss A. Blake from the local school staff has been filled by the appointment of Miss M. A. Rogers as pupil teacher. Inspector Kiely paid a visit of inspection to (he local police station last evening. This morning he proceeded to Shannon, and from there will return home to Wanganui. Mr Ferguson, a lumber merchant,, has bequeathed a million dollars for the erection of statues and monuments commemorating America’s historical figures and events. The burial place of Admiral Paul Jones has been discovered in a Paris cemetery. The remains of the deceased Admiral are to be transferred to America.
The Earl of Linlithgrow (formerly Lord Hopetoun, first Governor-Gen-eral of the Australian Commonwealth) has been ordered abroad for three weeks on accdiM of his health.
Mr G. A. Simpson met with a pain* ful accident on Sunday. While playirg with some little children he must have strained the muscled of a leg, as next morning it had swollen greatly and pre* vented him from walking. At the school committee meeting on Saturday evening complimentary refer* ences were made to the work carried out during the past year by Messrs Clemett (chairman) and Baker (secre. tary), and a hope was expressed that their services would be again available in the interests of the school. On Tuesday the Premier was in Christchurch. He arrived in Welling* ton on Wednesday morning, took the io.ro train on the Maoawatu line and arrived at Levin in the afternoon at.d opened the Horticultural Show. This over he was driven to Shanuon, where he received deputations and was ban* quetted. Next morning he started fcg Turakina. It is surprising, soliloquises the Levin “Farmer,” how be gets through so much work. It is evident Mr Seddon has solved one problem at least that the “ Farmer ” has not.
