Football.

NOTES. By “ True Sport.” A meeting of the Awahou Club is called for to-night, when important business will be transacted. The following team will represent Huia in their match against Awahou on Saturday: —Backs: M. Royal, D. Jackson (captain), Tua, Tommy, D. Tatana, Kereama ; forwards : Roia, Petchira, Keue, Petuera, Phartana, Tuna, Jack; wings, P. Rakena, Terri Royal. Emergencies: Putty, Potaka. It is with pleasure I record the fact that a gymnasium has been started in our midst. It would be pleasing to record the fact that we had a public gymnasium, the sole property of the people, and such could be if we only went about the affair in a sytematic manner. However, I will have more to say about the subject later on. For the time being, the Public Hall will meet all requirements. Football clubs may possibly come to some arrangements regarding special nights. What are the Foxton Rugbyites doing ? A proposal was made some time ago to join Manawatu Union, but as yet only one club has held its annual meeting, and therefore there are no delegates appointed to consider the proposal. As the annual meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Union is fixed for Thursday night, it is impossible for the proposal to be considered at that meeting, which may delay football so far as Foxton is concerned. I understand that a scratch match has been arranged between Porotawhoa and Awahou for next Saturday, and sincerely hope such is the case, as the game should bring district club representatives into Foxton. Then these representatives can meet and decide their plan of campaign. Rally round the ball, boys, for time is short. In a countiy district (says tke Levin Farmer) a young football player was so upset in mind at not being made vice-captain when officers were elected for the coming season that he went over to the opposition club. Also that another player was so “ hurt ” in the scrimmage lor office that he went “ out of touch ” with his own club and joined the opposition. And this is sport ! If these assertions be true, I would be amongst the first to petition King Dick to have the ungrateful and inconsiderate club annihilated, and have all its members strung up to the nearest goal-posts as a warning to others who may be inclined to treat coming New Zealand reps, so niggardly as to deny them official positions. When these alleged footballers have served a term at football management, they may take it as a compliment rather than an insult to be denied the “ honour ” of being elected to an official position on a football club. The writer can assure these “ school-boys ” referred to that their late, club members bestowed an act of kindness upon them by not electing them, as the path of the football official is neither strewn with sweet scented roses nor is it one which is laden with “ beer and skittles.” The cream of the joke lies in the fact that neither of the players referred to have so far been chosen to represent New Zealand at Home. Truly, there is room for an inquiry into the action of the New Zealand selectors in overlooking such promising colts! But, then, it is hard to believe that such trivial reasons were sufficient to make “footballers” change camp. If so, may the end be peaceful !
