——* LORD MILNER EULOGISED. LOnpON, March 30. Hon. Alfred Lyttelton, Secretary for the Colonies, cabled to Lord Milner, on behalf of the Government, expressing recognition of the grMtness of his services in Cdiitronting with steadfast courage the issues of war and the scarcely less momentous problems of ensuing peace. His arduous and unflagging labours had laid deep and strong the foundations of a united South Africa. The Government regretted to hear that he suffered, and earnestly hoped that after a rest his splendid talent* would again be available to the Empire. PROSPEROUS INDIA. Calcutta, March 30. Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, states that during the last seven years thirteen millions sterling in taxation has been remitted in India. HEAVY DAMAGES. London, March 30. Captain Frederick John Fraser, of the Indian army, brought an action to restrain George Edwards from presenting “ The Cmgalee,” on the ground that its idea and general scheme had been derived from his unpublished play “ The Hanjiahn ” or Lotus Girl. Edwards denied that “ The Cingalee” derived its plot or ideas from “ The Hanjiahn.” The jury awarded £3OOO damages. MINOR MATTERS EPITOMISED. It is officially reported that the American cotton crop amounts to 13,600,000 bales. The Daily Mail states that a new Transvaal Constitution has been signed at London. A case of dengue fever from Brisbane has been isolated at Sydney, while two cases have been similarly treated at Melbourne.
