Queen Alexandra and Princess Victoria are Visiting at Lisbon. Mr Charles Thorpe, an old Nelson colonist, died on Thursday aged 84. Sir Alfred Cadman, Speaker of the Legislative Council, died on Thursday morning after a long illness. Miss Jacobson, M.A., of Wanganui, hae been appointed assistant mistress of the Auckland Grammar School. Mrand Mrs G. H. Stiles returned last evening from a holiday trip to Auckland and the Hot Lakes district. King Edward, who has remained indoors since bis recent indisposition, walks now in the garden at Buckingham Palace. The Court Circular announces that bis Majesty derives much benefit from the outing. A presentation was made at the Napier post-office on Thursday to Mr W. J. Irwin, well-known and esteemed as a public officer, who has resigned from the service to take up a private position in the Mauawatu district. ,Mr J?s; Boddie, of Eltham, president of the Taranaki Provincial Council of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, is definitely announced as a candidate for th« Patea seat in the Opposition and farming interests. The Hon. J. Carroll, Native Minister, left Opitiki on Tuesday for Maraeuui Maori settlement, where he unveiled a memorial stone efefited to the memory of 15 children who, together with two adults of the .Whanau Apaoui tribe, lost their lives in crossing the Motu river iri a Canoe. The memorial stone, which cost £l4O, consists of a handsome pedestal of white Italian marble, 16 feet in height, and mounted on three large blocks of dressed granite standing on a concrete base surrounded with an iron railing. The pedestal is beautifully carved, and on the sides are the names of the victims and an inscription in Maori,
