Lord Milner, in resigning his South African post, relinquishes an income representing £II,OOO a year. This is the highest figure paid to any of our Pro consols with the exception of the Viceroy of India. The gentleman holding that office receives £20,000’. This looks a fairly substantial sum, but as a matter of fact, it never covers expenses. The Governor • Generalship of the Commonwealth of Australia is worth £IO,OOO. This sum will also be paid Earl Grey as Governor-General of Canada. But in neither case is the income adequate to meet the expenses ot entertaining incidental to the dignity of the position. In South Africa, on the other hand, the Governor-General need entertain but little. The £II,OOO paid to Lord Milner is a dual salary, £BOOO being paid to him as Governor of the Transvaal and £3OOO as High Commissioner.
