The Mayor, Mr G. A. Simpson, left for Palmerston North this morning on i visit for two or tlnee days. Dr Bedell Sivwriglvt, who captained the English football team in Australia md New Zealand, has returned to Sydney from a visit to the East. Mr J. Vile, paid a visit to Foxton yesterda}', making himselt ac qnainted with matters requiring attention in this part of his electorate. Mr George Fisher, M.H.R., was admitted to the Wellibgton Hospital on Friday last suffering from an attack of dropsy. On Sunday Mr Fisher’s condition Was very grave, Mr William Akefstein, an ex Councillor and pioneer resident of Nelson, died at the Port on Saturday, aged eighty yeaf's. He built the first wharf at Nelson, also many early bridges, and superintended the harbour works in the pioneer days. Mr and Mrs j. Doyle, of Foxton. have suffered a double bereavement during the past week. On Sundav their eldest daughter Kate,- aged 28. was drowned while bathing in the Mangahao River, near Pahiatua, A week ago they lost an infant son. Th® Hon. Hdl Jones arrived in Dannevirke on Saturday and proceeded to Ontlondville to represent the Ministry at the Frierldlv Societies annual demonstration on Sunday in aid funds of the Waipawa Hospital. The gather ing was a great success, the weath 1 being particularly fine. Mr Hall-Jones returned to Wellington on Monday. Prior to his departure from Welling ton on Satiffday for Australia, en route on holiday leave to London, Captain E. J. Harvey, of the Queen of the South,- was presented with a travelling rug and silver-mounted cigar case by the employees of Levin and Co,, Ltd. Mr D. Williamson made the presentation on behalf of the staff. Captain Hai'Vev has been in Levin and Co.’s employ for over 20 years. He will return to the colony in October next.
