Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Hol-stein has been betrothed to the Duke of Coburg. The approaching visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to India Is creating much enthusiasm amongst all clases of people. Mr E. G. Jellicoe, the well-known New Zealander, has been admitted a member of the Bar of the Northern Circut In Wales.
Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, represented King Edward at the consecration of the Evangelical Cathedral in Berlin on Monday. News comes from Sydney of the death ot Mr H. C. Whyte, the well known Australian sportsman and slock breeder.
Mr Hal. Goodacre, proprietor of the well-known Egrnont Boot Factory, New Plymouth, is a visitor to Foxtm to-day.
Obituary announcements cabled from London include the following names :—Earl Morley, Sir Martin Gosselin (British Minister at Lisbon), and Wemyss Reid. Rev. Harris, who is giving up work in the Methodist Connexion, preaches his farewell address in the local church on Sunday evening. He takes his departure from the district during the following week. At a meeting of Wellington citizens, about 30 being present, it was decided to made a presentation to Captain Seddon as a mark of appreciation and esteem, and specially in recognition of the services rendered by him to the Empire in the late South African war. A committee was appointed to carry out this intention.
The 11 Standard ” records the death of Mr Timothy Kearins, an old and respected resident of the Manawatn district, Mr Kearins arrived in the colony in August, 1883, and took up his residence with his daughter, Mrs John Kearins, of Kairanga, He removed to Palmersson about three years ago, where he has lived ever since. He leaves two daughters—Mrs John Kearins, of Kairanga, Mrs F. B. Brough, of Palmerston—and one son— Mr P. Kearins, of Taihape—to mourn their loss.
The death is announced of Mr Guy Boothby, the novelist. The deceased was born in 1867 at Adelaide, South Australia, where his lather was in Parliament for some years, and his grandfather occupied a seat on the Supreme Court Bench. In 1891 deceased crossed Australia from north to south, and he also travelled extensively in the East. His ramblings in China are reflected in those weird books of his, in which his strange creation “Dr Nikola” figures prominently. Mr Boothby was a prolific writer.
