OUTSPOKEN PRESS.

NOTABLES SENTENCED TO

DEATH

LON DON, Feb. 20

The Standard’s correspondent states the Moscow municipality’s vote of condolence eulogises the Grand Duchess Elizabeth’s virtues, but does not affect to deplore her husband’s death. The newspaper Novosti declares the assassination was a material proof that Russia is sick and badly in need of a speedy cure. The Standard’s Odessa correspondent reports that among no class has there been an expression of sorrow for the murder of the Grand Duke Sergius or of reprobation of the assassin.

The police, with some difficulty, prevented unseemly demonstrations of joy at the event, stimulated by the agitation for reform and the abliteration of the Grand Ducal influence. ST. PETERSBURG, Feb. 20. It is reported the revolutionary committee has sentenced fourteen reactionaries to death, including the Grand Duke Vladimir, General Trepoff and the Dowager Empress. The St. Petersburg Consistory has unfrocked Father Gapon, a leader of the strikers. PARIS, Feb. 20, Socialist meetings throughout France affirm their solidarity with the heroic combatants for Russian liberty.
