Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, FEB. 21, 1905. A Final Reminder.

W e finally call the attention of ratepayers to me public meeting to be held to-morrow night, when the Public Hall should be filled to its utmost. Borough affairs will be discussed which should interest each and every resident of the town. There are those who complain that Borough rates are at present too high, and that by borrowing money to carry out necessary works will still make a further rise in rates. That may be ! But cannot ratepayers understand that by the installation of water and light .services the value of their property is not only increasing, but the town is progressing in the eyes of outsiders. And if the town is progressing, surely that fact means that its people are gaining the financial benefit. Is it not better to pay an increased rate and witness the Borough progress, than pay a smaller rate with a chance of living to see Foxton sink into oblivion. It must be essential to all that to accumulate one must speculate. Money makes money, and so does progress make progress Surely every right thinking person will understand that much benefit will be derived from an efficient water service, and we ho. e this will be the first matter considered. If people cannot get such necessities as good water and light, they will certainly not settle amongst us, but will go to some other place where progressive ideas are not only theoretically but practically carried out. Our correspondent columns to-da/touch on the water scheme, and doubtless much argument will arise from the sentiments contained therein. However, we hope to report that the different matters concerning the Borough will be fully gone into, and that each and every townsman will work in unison and endeavour to help their present Mayor to earn for Foxton at least the watchword of “ Progress.”
