DESPICABLE THEFTS.

TO THE riDITOU OF THE MANAWATtJ lIEiIAIjD

Sir,—l should like to bring before the notice of the public an act of vandalism regarding one of the papers in the public read’ng-room. The Weekly Press, of Feb, th, contains a number of photographs of Foxton township, scenes at the recent race meeting, etc., and there has been a great demand for this copy—go great I believe that the local booksellers have been unable to meet it. Those who were disappointed in securing copies would naturally make for the reading-room where the Weekly Press is always to be had. I was among the number, but to my surprise I found the pages relating to Foxton were missing, apparently having been deliberately torn out. I consider this a most dastardly act, and one that should not be allowed to pass unnoticed. I hope, Sir, that the public will, in defence of their own interests, keep a strict watch for anyone destroying or mutilating papers, and report them to the policei A conviction or two would soon put a stop to these malpractices. I am, etc.,

A. Foxtonian, Foxton, Feb. 13th, 1905.

[As you suggest, the public would be working in their own interest were they to report such matters to the police. Some people seem to imagine they have a perfect I’ight to do what they wish with Library numbers, and it is time an example was made.—Ed. M.H.]
