Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, FEB. 9, 1905. Public Enthusiasm in Foxton. AT A LOW EBB.
Home two weeks ago, whan we advocated the establishment of a Maori Museum in Poxtoft, the Manawatu Standard, in referring to same, preferred to think Foxtonians were too busy making money out of flax to pav attention to such trivial matters. We had our doubts at the time, but since then the haze has been lifted mysteriously from our eyes, and we are forced to believe that there is at least some truth in the sarcastic utterance of our Palmerston North contemporary. A public meeting was called last night in the interests of the Borough, pure and simple, and We are sorry Id record the fact that hot mote than halLa-doZen, apart from Band members, put in an appearance. The object of the meeting was to raise funds to wipe off the Band debt. Possibly there are citizens who do not know, so we deem it our duty to repeat that all the Band properties, uniforms and instruments included, have been vested in the Borough, and are therefore the sole property of ratepayers These bandsmen, apart from practising assiduously and offering their services continuously for public benefits, etc., are asked to make a monthly allowance towards the Band’s upkeep. .And yet the public were missing last night! In the absence of the Mayor (G. A. Simpson, Esq.) Bandmaster Betty explained in brief the object of the gathering, which then adjourned to a further date, to be advertised, when it is hoped the public will roll up in large numbers. Certainly the notice given was all too short for last night's meeting.
