MORE JAPANESE SUCCESSES

LOW RATE OF MORTALITY

The Japanese seizure of important outpost positions on General Kuropatkin’s right renders it necessary tn alter the entire dispositions of the Russian army. The Japanese, through Chinese merchants, are circulating accounts o! events which occurred in St. Petersburg on the 22nd January, and the Russian forces are much discouraged. The Japanese medical and surgical statistics indicate an astonishingly low rate of mortality in General Oku’s army. Between May and December, 24,642 cases were treated for disease, and of these 18,578 re covered, 40 died, and 5609 were sent to Japan. The figures are unequalled in the history of warfare. For the same period 210 of General Oku'a officers and 4917 men were killed ; 748 officers and 20,337 men were wounded. Sixteen per cent of the wounded died.
