Manawatu Herald. [Estabished Aug. 27, 1878. TUESDAY, JAN. 31, 905. A Necessity.
The happenings of fires ui our midst of late seems to bid us that if we do not soon emerge from the darkness and wipe the sleepers out of otlv eyes, the whole town will be ablaze, and we shall bo powerless to prevent its destruction, Certainly some manner of Fire Brigade should be formed to protect life and property in case of emergency. There are plenty of young men in the town who will be foilnd only too Willing to volunteer for service, but they luck the initiative faculties. Let the old birds lead the way, and the young stuff will soon follow, and with a little energy, we shall soon have a folly equipped Fire Brigade. At present, shops and dwellings appear to be in the hands of the flames, It may bo argued that without hydraulic water power a Brigade is useless. Hot 1 Let us learn to walk before we attempt to run. Start off, if needs be, with a well trained bucket' brigade, and gradually work ourselves up, till we have a motor service probably, Who knows but what oUr Borough Council will not come to the aid of volunteers and raise a loan to start the project ?
