— _♦ A tramp entered a baker’s shop shivering and trembling piteously. “ A loaf, please, mum,”, he said, depositing 'he money on the counter. “ Where’s the nearest hospital, please, mum ? ” “ The nearest hospital! " she ejaculated. “ Yes, mum; I’m feeling very bad. I believe I’m sickening for something like scarlet fever, I think.” “ What! ” she shrieked. “ Gei out of my shop.” He turned submissively to obey. “ Here, take your money," she cried. He did so, and humbly offered the bread. “ Get out of my shop ! ” He cawled out and with bowed head went round the corner. Presently a twin monument p! wretchedness came towards him. “ Well, Bill ? ” said he. "Right (), ’Enory,” came the answer. “It worked Al, mate. Now, you do it for a bit of bacon, and we can have lunch.”
