On Thursday, 8000 Japanese volunteers surprised a large body of Russians who were attempting diverting movements to the north west of Hsienchang. After a hot conflict the Russians were compelled to retire on Mukden. The Chinese at Pekin and Tientsin have collected winter clothing for 40,000 persons who are homeless at Mukden. The Japanese, however, refused to allow the clothing to be forwarded, fearing it may benefit the Russians,
