Foxton State School.
DISTRIBUTION OP PRIZES. The annual distridution of "prize.® in connection with the Foxton State School took place yesterday afternoon on the occasion of the “ break-ing-up ”fpr the midsummer holidays, and was marked by the usual enthusiasm on the part of the children. The function was held in the West class-room and was attended by a small number of ladies, and by Messrs Clemett, H Austin, 0. L. Barnard, and the Rev. Wilson, members of the School Committee. In opening the proceedings the Chairman, Mr Clemett, gave an interesting and appropriate address to the children, in the course of which he took occasion to compliment them on their success at the recent examination by the Inspectors, and to congratulate the Headmaster and his highly efficient staff on the very satisfactory results of their year’s work For the benefi t of the few who managed to fail in obtaining promotion he also referred pointedly to the necessity of regular attendance, and concluded a happily-worded speech by calling on Mrs H. Austin to present the prizes. These were awarded to the children in each class who obtained the highest marks at the late examining visit of the Inspectors. Mrs Austin performed her pleasant task with her usual courtesy
and grace, bestowing kindly words and gracious smiles on tfca happy prize-winners. The following is ttoh* prize-list.:— Bovs. Standard Vl.—Kenneth Eastoii 1; Richard Speirs, 2. Standard I.—Victor Betty, 1; Garnet Fraser, 2.Girls. 1 Standard VL—Hilda Cook, 1; Ethel Opley, 2. , Standard V.—Rose' Dodson, 1; Ivy Hughes, 2.- f Standard IV.—Christina Honors, 1; Violet Nye, 2. . Standard Hl.—Belle Small, 1; MillyKing,2. Standard ll.—Clara Adin, 1;: Ruby Hughes, 2. Standard I.—Lily Coley, 1 ; Avis Dudson, 2. , . In addition, suitable gifts of a more or less educational character were , presented to every ghild in the infant department, and very beautiful picture-books to all. the children in the present {Standard I. A special Good Attendance prize, to be presented by Mr H. Austin when the school re opens, was awarded to ; aster S. Wanklyn, who had been present f»very school-day, morning and-afternoon, throughout the year. " . After the distribute of the prizes and a short speech by the headmaster, in which he spoke irf terms •- of high praise of the excellence ot iht, School Committee and its Chairman, the ability and devotion to. duty of bis teaching staff, and the liberality ', of Poston citizens, /enthusiastic cheers, were given for the King, the Queen, the Chairman and School Committee, the headmaster and hie assistants, and all and sundry. The , - singing in* very good style of the . National Anthem closed the indoor ceremonial. Bat when the children filed bat into the playground, they "found that this was not all. Tine ql , biscuits and lollies of every description had been kindly forwarded to the school by Messrs Gummerfield A Spring, Hennessy, Walker, and A. Pal. These had to be distributed, * scrambled for, and done justice,to. And it was so! Then more cheers,. Then home. And then the - usual rain!
