Manawatu Herald. [Established Aug. 27, 1878.] TUESDAY, DEO. 6, 1904. Hospital Help.

The greatest pleasure and happiness given to life is undoubtedly that feeling of contentment which courses through our human veins when we feel that by our actions others have been made happy. Whether it be by cheering the sick, helping the poor, or leading the blind, a sense of pride fills the human heart. And what else is it but human ? Man’s duty to his fellow man bids it! In this fair Colony, we are fortunately blessed with State subsidies to keep our Hospitals going. But, nevertheless, human nature asserts itself throughout the Colony when called upon, and the result is that all sorts of amusements are organised—from picnics to balls—the proceeds of which go towards those unfortunately inflicted by disease or injury who are compelled to seek shelter in hospital wards. Of late years the public of Wellington have been adopting the style of Australian cities, and selecting one day of the calendar —termed “Hospital Day”— on which a special effort is made to raise money. It is pleasing to know that five of the city bands took part in last Sunday’s demonstration, and that something over £2OO was realised. The smaller towns of the Colony are going in for “ Garden Fetes,” and reports are coming in from everywhere that large sums are

being reaped by this means. Why cannot Foxton follow this lea'd and hold a “ Garden Party.” Certainly, it would seem we are fortunate in not requiring a hospital a fact which speaks well for the healthy state of Foxton —but Palmerston North District Hospital has a claim on our residents. Therefore, let some of our citizens take the matter up, when, by the aid of a “ Garden Fete ” in Victoria Park, we feel sure a goodly sum could be raised and so help to ameliorate the sufferings of the afflicted. Om Borough Band could play a big part in the proceedings.
