01D boys v. DEBATING SOCIETY.
(B|p u Fielder.”)
A match between the above mentioned teams took place on the schoolgrouncl on Wednesday afternoon, and terminated in a win for the Old Boys by 20 runs on the first innings. The Debating Society were outclassed by their opponents, but made a plucky fight for it, and under more favourable auspices should make a bold bid for the “ ashes." Some very promising cricket was shown on both sides. In the batting department, A. Shadbolt and W. Cook were in evidence amongst the Old Boys, while L. Alzdorf and G; Huse batted very creditably for the Debater Some of the latter were very weak in their batting, and did not appear at all domfortable at the wickets, but allowance must be made for the fact that the pitch was strange to them and their opponents were familiar With it, The Debaters should make a better Stand on their own ground. In the bowling, K. Ifurtde and P« Whibley trundled well for the Old Boys, while in a like capacity E. Spelman was a tower of strength to the Debaters. The fielding on both sides was only modicre, and in this branch there is plenty of room for improvement. W, Cook and F. Barnard kept wickets for , their respective teams. On the completion of the first innings the players adjourned to the school, where an excellent lunch had been prepared by the Old Girls, to which full justice was done by the company. At the conclusion of the repast, Mr E. Spelman, as captain of the Debaters, briefly thanked the Old Girls for the excellent spread they had provided, and Mr W. Cook spoke in similar terms on behalf of the Old Boys. Each captain called for three cheers for the young ladies, which were given with right good will. Refreshments were again partaken of in the evening. The return match is to come off shortly, and will be played on the Debating Society’s ground.
