ASSAULT ON PORT ARTHUR THE STEEL BLADESBROUGHT INTO USE. JAPS SET A TASK. MINES EXPLODE. It was officially announced at Tokio on Sunday evening that an assault on Sungsunsban and the forts to the eastward, began on Saturday The object has not yet been accomplished. The Morning Post reports that the Russian guns at Port Arthur are almost silent owing to the scarcity of ammunition since the magazine was blown up. Generals Kakimura and Saito led specially trained bodies of swordsmen into the Port Arthur forts and charged desperately, being sanguinely resisted. The general attack continues. . It . Considerable irritation is felt m Japanese circles owing to Britain s inability to prevent the increasing
shipment of English coal to Russia. Count Suyematsu, in an interview, said Japan feels that Europe is assisting Russia iu a manner not contemplated. Even England is indirectly rendering assistance. The Baltic fleet could not have sailed without English coal. A foreign resident from Vladivostok who has reached Nagasii 1 -'' reports that twenty steamers arrived during the month with coal and stores* 11c states a torpedoer was sunk and a German steamer injured owing to the uncertain location of the harbour mines.
