Still the war in the Far East drags its weary length along, and it would appear the shot and shell is to hum for some time to come. General Stoessel is defending Port Arthur manfully, though the tremendous odds against him must sooner or later tell its tale, and the coveted port eventually fall into the hands of the Japanese. Still, our cables have informed us that Port Arthur was to fall on several occasions, but Stoesael’s defence has proved such a stumbling block for the solid attack of the Japanese that it Will not surprise the outside world if the Baltic Fleet arrive in Eastern waters in time to take an active part in hostilities before the Mikado’s army march triumphant into their goal - Port Arthur. When once they do get a footing, the struggle may practically be over, for with such a splendid navy to protect them, troops will be poured in from Japan in great numbers, which Will give them the upper hand both in defence and attack. Latest cables report a. bombardment of the city by the Japanese extending over nine hours. Russian deserters are increasing in numbers, and part of the town is reported in flames. The state of affairs within the walls of the Citadel is anything but pleasant reading, and the news of Port Arthur’s downfall will be welcome,—for at present general distress is rampant by heroic defenders of the port, who do not seem to have the semblance of a chance of holding out. The Japs triumph is hourly expected.
