Manawatu Herald. [Established Aug. 27, 1878.] THURSDAY, NOV. 24, 1904. “ The Paper.”
A short while ago we received a copy of “ The Paper,” a new Socialist periodical, which we perused attentively, both on account of its being the first of its kind in the colony and because of the very readable matter it contained. We have awaited the arrival of a second, but it come to band, and wo
now learn with regret that the paper has lapsed. We feel sor/y for this, for though not Socialists ourselves, we believe it is a good thing that the people of New Zealand should become better acquainted with the great movement in favour of social reform that is making itself felt in many parts of the world, and particularly in the Australasian colonies. This could not be effected in any better way than through the medium of a paper specially devoted to record ing the progress and purpose of Socialism. However, it is not to be, and those who hanker after Socialism will have to content themselves with the Clarion, the organ of the party in Great Britain, The failure of “ The Paper ” is perhaps significant of the manner in which the New Zealand public regard Socialism. Although Socialism is apparently a powerful ictor in the Australian political world, while in this colony it does not exist as a parly, we venture to assert that New Zealanders are equally as free and democratic iif their opinions as their brethren across the Tasman Sea. The only difference is that the people of this colony appear to have a rooted objection to the term Socialism. They prefer to east the husk aside and delve for the kernel. This may perhaps account for the untimely end of “ The Paper.” At any rate so it seems to us.
