RUSSIAN DESTROYER SUNK. GENERAL ITEMS. One of the three Russian desstroyers which endeavoured to reach Chefoo from Port Arthur, the Kasuga sank one after a fight lasting half an hour, rescuing four of the crew from the sea ; the Batsushima sank another, after receiving an ineffective blow from a torpedo; and two gunboats torpedoed the third, sinking her with all aboard off the promontory, south of po r t Arthur. The Russians displayed reckless bravery. The German steamer Batelan, which was endeavouring to run the blockade at Port Arthur, was captured by the Japanese, and taken to Satebo, Her cargo consisted of winter clothes, blankets, medicine, and an enormous quantity of salt beef. The Batelan was formerly the British steamer Tholes. The Japanese are constructing coast defence forts at Pigeon Bay, west of Port Arthur. The Japanese did not fire the mine they had planted north of Keedwansban because the counterscarp and galieries of the fort had been evacuated.
