Apostle Dowie Beaten.
(Per s.s. Ventura at Auckland.) SAN FRANGISCO, Oct. 20. John Alexander Dowie, the prophet, was defeated in his fight for the estate of Fred Sutton, a New Zealand sheep-breeder, who died in Chicago in 1902. Sutton went to Zion City, Dowie’s new town, in 1900, and fell under the prophet’s influence. He died two years later, leaving Dowie his entire estate, £II,OOO. The relatives were cut Out on the ground that they were not Christiana. John 8., George and Charles Sutton, brothers, and Mrs Ellen Elderidge, sister, came from New Zealand to break the'will. The hearing took one week, and the jury gave a verdict in favour of the New Zealand heirs. The contestants alleged that the testator was not well mentally or physically, and not of a sound disposing mind, and that Hbwie used undue influence. The,, Appellate Court at Chicago on October sth gave a decision that 5 ,E(owie should must pay Samuel G. Priddle £4OO damages for a libel in l Dowie’s publication, “ Leaves of Healing,” denouncing Priddle for stating that be bad dreamed that Dowie Would be assasinated in May, 19QJ.,. During the trial Dowie’s counsel admitted that bis client was worth several million dollars.
