Manawatu Herald. [Established Aug. 27, 1978.] THURSDAY, NOV. 3, 1904. The Dogger Bank Affair.
The British speaking race throughout the whole world are watching with anxious eyes every development concerning the outrage perpetrated on the waters of the North Sea by Russia’s “ manioc ” squadron—the Baltic Sea Fleet. It is pleasing to note that both Britain and Russia have agreed to allow the matter to go to arbitration, though the latest cables received would lead us to believe that the crucial stage had not yet been passed, Speaking at
Naphill, Mr Walter Rothschild, a member of the House of Commons, said “ the crisis had not ended, since, if the result of the inquiry was equivocal or unsatisfactory to the powers concerned, war may ensue.” This may be interpreted to mean that resort to arms will be necessary before the fishing drama closes. Britain must do justice to her millions of subjects, who are rightly protesting against undue and uncouth interference from foreigners It remains for those entrusted with Britain’s interests at the inquiry at Vigo to see that we get every penny of compensation we are justly entitled to, and also to demand the punishment of those marauders responsible for the most atrocious outrage ever committed on the high seas in modern times.
