Manawatu Herald. [Established Aug. 27, 1878.] TUESDAY, OCT. 12, 1904. Progress of the War.
The Russians appear to have sustained the worst defeat they have experienced during the war. It was anticipated that when Kuropatkin assumed the offensive, a decisive battle would ensue. Expectation has not been disappointed, and the Jap has to add one more victory to his already long list of successes; though the loss both to conquerors and conquered appears to have been enormous. The Russian loss is estimated at as high a figure as 80,000, though this is no doubt somewhat exaggerated. Still their loss in men must have been not far short of 40,000, and they appear also to have abandoned a large number of cannon. What the final result of this battle will be is hard to say, but it cannot be otherwise than far-reaching. In our opinion it will go a long way towards bringing matters to a climax; since the continuous success of the Japanese followed by this last victory cannot help but add to the growing weariness in Russia at this stupendous and unavailing bloodshed, and
hasten the proclomation of welcome peace. Meanwhile, important developments may be expected to follow, and the full fruits of the battle will no doubt be seen in the course of the next few days.
