RUSSIA AGGRESSIVE. A private censored message has reached St. Petersburg stating the Russians have occupied Yentaiputse, manoeuvring the Japanese out without severe fighting. The Russians arc advancing at all points. Russian official reports state the japonesc are falling bade on Liaoyang. The report that the Russians are wearing Chinese garments is interpreted to mean that their winter clothing has not arrived, CONTRABAND SOUGHT AFTER. The Japanese stopyed the British steamer Victoria near Weihaiwei, explaining thaj they were watching three British ships which were suspected of attempting to convey tinned meat and vegetables to Aort Arthur. The owner of the steamer Calchas declines, in future, to carry United States mails to Japan owing to the Russians alleging that they found amongst the Calchas’ mail, matter intended to give the Japanese information. Russia and Japan continue to take one hundred and fifty thousand tons of Welsh coal per month. They have taken during the war two and a-half millions of tons. A NEW ZEALANDER INTERVIEWED. • BRISBANE, Oct. n. John Chartross, of New Zealand, has returned by the Changolia from a visit tojapam On being interviewed he said that business generally was exceeding dull and likely to be worse. '' The Japanese coolies are becoming very insolent_ to foreigners as a result of their victories, but there is no ” swelled head ” among the better classes. If the Japanese are successful in the war all foreigners would have to quit. They would be unable to live with the islanders. Even now the Japanese Government will not employ foreigners, and not a single one is to be found in the service. All the larger businesses are managed and worked solely by Japanese. The general' opinion is that the war will last for a long time unless the Russians give in. The Japs never think ot calling “ enough ” in . a fight until completely exhausted, both financially and as regards men. Japanese soldiers are poorly paid, There never was such a cheap army put'into the field before. Some of the Russian shells fired from Port Arthur have been opened and found half filled with sand. This induced the Japs to draw closer to the town, Japan expects Port Arthur to be captured early in November. Chartress was aboard the Tsinan when the Russians overhauled her. He declares that the reason she was not A sunk was that the Russian boats overcrowded and provisions were not plentiful. Regarding the great gold discovery in Japan, he said there was an impression it was greatly exaggerated,
