THE CATHEDRAL CHORISTERS GLEE AND CONCERT PARTY. The musical people of Foxton and district will no doubt take full advantage of the opportunity of hearing the excellent entertainment at the Public Hall to-morrow evening when the Cathedral Choristers and the first-class company supporting them will make their first appearance. “Of the many successes scored (writes the critic of the New Zealand Times, of July 2), none was more popular than that of the Cathedral Choristers, a quartette of prepossessing boys in Eton jackets, with highlytrained voices, who sang charmingly in harmony. Time, tune, and breathing were pleasantly accurate, whilst the modest bearing of the lads created an impression emphatically in their favor. Their first number was Pelleisser’s pretty serenade “ Awake,” cleverly arranged for two sopranos and two altos. The quartette was marked by bell-like enunciation and pretty pianissimo effects, and completely captured the audience. In response to an imperative encore they sang a pleasing rendering of the well-known waltz ballad “ I’ll be your sweetheart,” which had to be repeated again and again before the audience were satisfied. Later the Choristers sang “ Whisper and I shall hear ”in a quaint setting. As an encore, the solo and chorus, “ Come back to me,” was rendered in a delightfully pleasing manner. Miss Alice Layton (soprano) is another prominent member of the company. Her singing is spoken of in the highest terms. Mr Leslie Warton (coon melodist) will supply the humorous element, and “Kellman the Magician ” will introduce many items of sleight of hand and illusions, Mr Carden Wilson’s turn is one of the finest ever presented in New Zealand, and his impersonations of Cuyler Hastings, Bland Holt, J. B. Atholwood, Alfred Damper, JReuben Fax, Robert Brough, and other stage celebrities are so true to life that for nine weeks he has been one of the principal attractions in Wellington. The box plan is now open at Mr A. Fraser’s.
