We are in receipt of particulars of the local Magistrate’s Court records for the quarter ending 30th Sept., 1904. The amount sued for in the Magistrate Court during that period was £235 12s 6d, of which £135 14s 5d was subsequently recovered. The number of plaints issued amounted to 83. Five Old Age Pensions were renewed, and three fresh ones granted; also one adoption order. The criminal cases for the quarter numbered 72, of which some 20 were brought at the instance of the Truancy Inspector. Fees and fines in connection with the criminal prosecutions amounted to £34 3s, and civil fees to £l7 9s. As far as the Government is concerned, the
past quarter has been a very prosperous one, but the same cannot be said from the point of view -E the community. An average oi rJy one criminal case a day is anything but satisfactory.
