PRESENTATION TO MRS W. COOK. A large gathering assembled at the English Church schoolrooin on Tuesday evening last to bid farewell to Mrs W. Cook, who is leaving Foxton to take up her residence in Palmerston North. Progressive euchre was first indulged in, with the result that Miss Annie Collins obtained the lady’s prize for securing the highest number of points, and Mr Percy Easton the gent’s. Euchre over, the most important event of the evening the presentation—took place. The Mayor, Mr Simpson, in a felicitous speech, presented Mrs Cook with a box of silver and a handsome easy Chair upholstered in tapestry on behalf of Mrs Cook’s many friends, to which the Rev. Wilson suitably responded. The company then sat down to a tnost enjoyable supper, also prepared by Mrs Cook’s lady friends, at the conclusion of which “ Auld Lang Syne " and the well known song “ For he’s a jolly good fellow ” were sung, with the variation that the “ he ’’ was changed to “ she.” Three hearty cheers for Mrs Cook terminated the meeting. It is estimated that some 8o or go people were present, and that so large a number should attend is a clear proof of Mrs Cook’s popularity. The arrangements were carried through without a hitch, and the ladies who assisted in the function are to be commended both for the energetic and able manner in which everything was conducted, and for the suitability of the articles the subject of the presentation. Mrs W. Cook has lived in Foxton for a large number ot years. She has rendered assistance in numerous social functions here, more particularly in those connected with the Church of England. In fact the success that has always attended the Church socials has been largely due to the indefatigable efforts of Mrs Cook. Mr W. Cook, who was lately connected with the Manawatu Herald, left Foxton recently to take up a position on the staff of-the Manawatu Standard. Mr Cook was a well known resident of Foxton, having lived here since his boyhood. For some years he was employed in our office, then under the proprietorship of Mr E. S. Thynne and finally became a partner in the firm of Cook and Thynne, which has just been dissolved by mutual consent. Mrs Cook left for her new home by yesterday morning’s train. The best wishes of Foxton folk will accompany Mr and Mrs Cook in departing.
