Further additions are made to the Himatangi stock sale. The Antarctic exploring ship Discovery has arrived at Portsmouth. All on board are well. It is reported that yesterday a local resident netted throe tins of whitebait between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is a big haul for the time of year. The Licensing Bill has passed its second reading. It is stated that the opponents of the Bill are withholding themselves for the final discussion. The Taihape News, started some time ago by Mr James Ivess, is about to be enlarged. Taihape is a wonderful place. With a small population it supports two newspapers.
On Thursday evening the Foxton Brass Band will, if the evening is fine, day a number of selections in the Main street. A collection will also be taken up in aid of the band’s instrument fund. The opening of the Levin .Moronic Lodge and the installation of ■i ■ .s, vill take place to-morrow at Levin. Vbout 14 members of the Te Awahou Lodge intend to be present at the ceremony. News has been received of a terrible massacre at the Catholic Mission of St. Paul in New Britain, The natives attacked the Mission and killed nine of the inmates, subsequently mutilating their bodies. The Government im mediately sent a punitive expedition, which succeeded in capturing a hum ber of the assassins, twenty-six of whom were shot.
A meeting of the committee of the Athletic Club was held at Mr Gray’s hotel last night. It was decided to affiliate with the West Coast Athletic Association. It was also arranged that two men should be engaged to prepare the cycling track for the laying of limestone. A vote of thanks to the chair and to Mr Gray for the use of the room concluded the meeting. Alexander Nicoll, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, Blenheim, stabbed himself to death on Sunday with a sword-bayonet, which had been left in the hotel by a trooper some time before. He was an exCedirtgly heavy cigarrette smoker, and sometimes smoked 10 og 12 packets of cigarettes in one day. In the opinion of the doctor, such a quantity would have the effect of shattering his nervous system and demoralising his brain. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased died of a wound self-inflicted while temporarily insane. Mr Rutherford, in advocating the nationalisation of the drapery business pointed to the ladies’ gallery as ample evidence of the vast profits that would accrue to the State if his suggestion were adopted. He may have convinced his male hearers, but, though the ladies blushed at being suddenly dragged into the sphere of active politics, it was plain that they did not sympathise with the humorous member from Hurunui. A big fire occurred in Wellington last Friday night at some bulk stores on the outskirts of the city. The Colonial Oil Company, Messrs Kempthorne Prosser & Co., and Johnson & Co., suffered severely, and it was only the strenuous efforts of the fire brigade that prevented the fire from spreading. Large quantities of oil and chemicals were stored in the buildings, and these added greatly to the labours of the firemen. Frequent explosions took place as the fire ran through the oils, acids, drugs, etc., but fortunately without injuring anyone. None of the firms affected by the fire are yet in a position to state the amount of their losses, but apparently they will be considerable. The origin of the blaze is as yet a mystery.
