Ellis alias McKenzie.
SUPPOSED TRACES IN HAWKE’S BAY. Some little time ago we (Dannevirke Advocate) reported that stock had been shot in the Raukatatahi district, and the camp was found of some unknown person; and at that time it was thought that the miscreant might be the man Ellis. Since that time several reports have 'been circulated by bushfellers, etc., in that district that camps and other traces of the man have been come across. The police of the district have also bv no means been inactive, Constables Butler and Baskerville having several times made trips of several days’ duration in seercii of him, but/ although coming upon many warm traces, have yet been unsuccessful in getting even a glimpse of him. They returned on Monday from another futile hunt, but still feel confident their quarry is in the district. A golden opportunity was lost when the first camp was found, as the men who came across it, although they had already . found a sheep shot and skinned, instead of leaving everything as it was, and lying in wait or informing the police, commenced to turn everything upside down, with the veiy natural result that the camp was pot again used.
