Fine weather prevailed on Saturday for the Cup matches, and there was a good number of the public present to follow the interest o( their respective teams. The play at times was very exciting, and in the Kiwi—A wall on match the barrackcrs and spectators would not keep off the ground, and consequently the game had to be stopped at intervals in order to clear the line, one spectator m particular being very loud in his anticipations of the referee’s decisions. Messrs J. Frew and Hoviona were the referees, and deserve every credit for the very impartial manner in which they controlled their respective games, hollowing is a brief account of each game HUIA v MOTUITI. Motuiti won the toss, and sent the ball into play. Kari (MotuitiJ returned and play settled down in the centre ot the held, until a tree kick awarded to Mouiti sent play into the Huia 25 s, 'but along kick by Peter Reweiti spoilt and Hnia forced. From the kick out Hnia followed up well, and a feeble kick in return gave them a chance of centering the ball, and from a loose scrum Tartana got possession and started a fine passing rush, which took them within five yards of the goal line. From a long throw in Tuna intercepted and punted down field. Macdonald returned with a long kick, which was mulled by a Motuiti back,'and following up well the ball was sent over the line, and touching down he scored Huia’s first try within a few minutes of halftime. T. Napier had the kick at goal but was unsuccessful.—-Hnia 3. Motuiti nil.- Motuiti kicked off, and sent the ball across the field to lartana, who punted out of touch by the 25 flag. On resuming play Motuiti kicked oft, and the • ' return was blocked by Peter Kowan, • .. .who was following upon his own, and taking a speculator at a rolling ball he took play into Huia’s 25, but a 'free • : kick spoilt, and Tartana punted down the field. Keri (Mouiti) got possession but thinking he was out of touch dropped the ball, and a Hnia back, • ' seeing the mistake', whipped up the • ■ ball and made a dash-for the line with Peter Rewiti in chase and the rest of the team looking on. He was caught , j juet on the line, and Peter getting possession of the ball started to make up lost ground, but instead of kicking he passed in his own 25, with the result that Tua intercepted and scored "S. Huia’s second try. The kick at goal was unsuccessful. —Hnia 6, Motuiti nil. From the kick out Huia had Motuiti entirely on the defensive, and after some loose scrums, in which the Hina's nearly always had the best of it, lartana again got possession of the ball, 1- and quickly transferring to Macdonald, % that player by a fine run got over the T line. D. Tartana had the kick at goal but was unsuccessful. —Huia g, Motuiti nil.
