British and Foreign Bible Society.
The annual meeting in connection with the local branch of the above Society was held in the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday evening last. The principal speaker at the meeting was Rev. J. Wrigley, of Levin, who came as a deputation on behalf of the Society. Mr W. R. Hutchison presided, and introduced the visitor to the audience, whereupon Mr Wrigley gave a most interesting and spirited address on the work of the Society. Mr Wrigley explained that his visit was in pursuance of a new plan that was being tried this year in connection with the Society’s work in New Zealand, viz., that instead of leaving the whole work of visiting the various towns to the New Zealand secretary, a number of ministers had agreed to assist him in his deputation work. The impression in the minds of the audience was that judging by the quality of Mr Wrigley’s address this new idea would be most likely to greatly strengthen the cause of the Society. Tha local secretary, Mr S. Baker, read a report of what had been done during the past year, and there seems to be every indication that progress will be made in the ensuing twelve months. The following committee was elected : President, Rev. W. Harris; secretary, Air 8. Baker; treasurer, Mr G. c tiles; committee, Messrs W. R. Hutchison, W. 8. Stewart, R. Moore, and T. Betty. Rev, W. Harris proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Wrigley for his address, the motion being seconded by Air R. Moore and carried by acclamation. The singing of the Doxology brought a most enjoyable meeting to a close.
