Old Age Pension Returns.
A return from the Old Age Pensions Department presented to the House of Representatives, is very interesting reading. The total number of claims received since the Act came into force is 24,013, the amount paid totalling £978,530, the cost of administration being £15,280. This is for the period ending March 31, 1904. The number of claims received for the financial year just ended was 1544, the number established being 1063. There were 311 rejected, and 419 were awaiting investigation. Auckland heads the list with the greatest number of claims received since the Act came into force —2324 —and Christchurch had the largest number of claims last year—--171. Seven localities only boast of one pensioner, and one of these is living at the Chatham Islands. There are 729 Maori pensioners. There are 555 less pensions paid than in the previous year, and 850 less than in 1902, representing an annual saving of £14,322. For the year ending March, 1904, pensions had been paid to n,197 people, of the annual value of £200,915.
