The Pahiaiua Seat.
ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES. Tbe Evening Post states/ that an attempt is to be made to upset Mr Hawkins’ election on the ground of alleged interference with the ballot boxes. The New Zealand Times says it is alleged that at one booth the ballotbox was op ned during the evening to see how the voting for the candidates was progressing. At another booth, it is alleged, there were several cases where husbands and wives were in the booth au the same time, and that the voting was done by the husband instead of the wife, and directions given. In some cases the voting papers were not initialled by the returning officer. At one booth the allegation is made that a voting -paper was given to a voter by a scrutineer, and on being asked from whom he received it, he replied ‘ from the scrutineer.” The chief returning officer reprimanded the scrutineer, took the paper which he was about to put into the ballot-box, and gave the voter a fresh ballot paper. CHARGES UNFOLDED. Later reports from Woodville state there is no truth in the statement that the ballot boxes had been tampered with.
