Football.

On Saturday afternoon the Fox ton sports-going people again had the excitement of seeing two matches plilycd on the- one afternoon. The first to take the field were the Awahou and Motuiti teams, and the first spell of the game was a real tough go; But the real draw was the Kiwi-Huia match, and those who expected to see a hard fought game were not disappointed, Following is a brief outline of each match : AWAHOU v. MOTUITI.

B. Dunn (Motuiti) kicked off, and the forwards following up sniartly took advantage of one of the Awafrou backs mulling the ball and looked like going straight through, but a bad kick spoilt their chance, the ball going out of touch in Awahou’s 25; from the line out F. Robinson got possession and punting it well dow'n the field play settled in the centre; from a loose scrum Presling got the ball and made a dash for the line, but Reweti ' looming in the way Jack took the chancy pf punting the ball over his head to being collared, but the kick was rather long and Keri (Motuiti) forced. From the kick.out play was soon in the centre of the fieid, but Potaka shifted the scene of action in quick time, getting hold of the ball he made a great run, getting clear of the forwards and most of the backs he was thinking how to get past the full-back (who, no doubt, he remembered from a futilre occasion) when Louisson came from behind and grassed him, thus averting . an . almost certain score; being kicked out of touch sounded half-time without scoring. Awahou commenced proceedings in the second spell, and J. Joe and Wright, who had followed up quickly, smothered Hannah’s (Motuiti) return; from a scrum which followed the ball was sent over the line, and Brown, in company with half a dozen opponents, went over on top of it.. The referee gave it as a fair try. J. Coley , took the kick at goal but failed to, ihcrease the score —3—o. Frcftn the kick out F. Robinson got possession and punted back to Motuiti’s 25, -Keri returned and found the line; -on the ball being thrown in Robinson again got possession and passing quickly to ?. Coley, the latter left at top for the line and scored in the corner. Shadbolt took the kick but the ball fell short —6—o. Motuiti again kicked off and placed on gamely, but shortly afterwards Awahou Avas awarded a ■free kick, and Shadbolt taking the kick placed a beautiful goal—9—o. Time being now up saw the finish of a well contested game. Mr E. E. Smith, in the absence of one of the Union’s referees, kindly consented to act, and his decisions were never disputed. :

KIWI v. HUIA. Those who had come expecting to witness a hartt-fourght battle between these two teams, were not disappointed. The ground was in a bad state owing to the heavy rain 'the previous night, one part especially, being nothing less than a quagtnire. The heavy going was in favour'of the Kiwis, who made it a fast forward game from the jump. The Huias were not represented by their usual team, and even had they been so we do not think it would have affected the result. The Kiwis put a. far more formidable team in the field than they did the previous Saturday, and now possess good conditioned forwards and a smart lot of backs. Kiwis set the ball in motion, the , Huias deciding,to defend the southern goal. Soon after play started one ot the Huia backs making a mistake soon had the Kiwi forwards on to him and play settled down in Huia’s 25. Here the play became most exciting at' times, and the referee had to stop the game more than once to clear the touch in goal line of interested spectators, excited ‘ bar rackets;’ &c. After innumerable scrums, which generally ended in the Kiwi forwards sweeping all before them and the ball Being forced, eventually Bevan snatched it up, and quickly transfering’ to Donovon, the latter succeeded hr getting over the line and scored. The kick at goal was a good one, the ball just going outside the posh From the quarter way kick Paki received the ball and returned it well into Huia’s 25, but Cook securing the ball made, a great run for the line, and, had he ran straight might have scored, but losing the ball it went out of touch, and thewhistle sounding half-time the stood—Kiwi 3 —Huia 0. The seconck spell again saw a splendid go, the Huias having shifted the position of a couple of players with the intention of making a back of it, while the Kiwis ‘ still relied on their forwards, although their backs plainly demonstrated by their play that they were quite able to take care of themselves. The change in the play on the part of the Huias nearly proved successful. The ball coming from a loose scrum was quickly passed to Tatana, who in turn transferred to Cook, whose pace soon took him away from the rest of his team,

liut kicking to hard lost his chance 'of scoring. Hooker punted well down the field and after a loose scrum which followed a free kick was awarded to Kiwi. Pope took the kick but was the distance being rather far; the ball going over the line the Kiwis evidently thought it would he forced but McDonald taking it smartly and seeing a good opening left at top down the field, closely pursued by Hooker and Paid; close to the half way flag Hooker overhauled his man and brought him down —with himself —in the mud, much to the amusement of the spectators. From the line out Donovon got possession and panting out of touch the whistle sounded time, leaving Kiwi the victors by 3 P oints to nil. Mr J. Frew had charge of the; whistle, The following team has been selected to represent Awahou in their match against Sandon to-morrow on the racecourse :—Full-back, B. Shadbolt; $, W. Coley, J. Coley, F. Robinson; five-eights, J. Presling; half, J. Louis- j son; wings, J. Jillott, W. Robinson; forwards, S. Wright, Jeffries, Hanna, Lawyer, Tuna, B. Dunn, Charles, Brown.
