The Manawatu Herald. [Established Aug. 27, 1878.] SATURDAY, JULY 30, 1904. Result of the Election.
Mb Hawkins is to be congratulated on his success. He has fought the contest single-handed, and come out on top in spite of the strong pressure exerted by the Government, and in a lesser degree by the Opposition. Though his return comes as a surprise to some, it was not unex pected. It was thought that the Newtown and Rongotea licensing scandals would considerably influence the voting in favour of the Prohibition candidate, and there is no doubt that Mr Hawkins’opposition to the Government in licensing matters was the strongest plank in his platform. The Government is very much annoyed over the result, as can be seen from the attitude of their organ, the N.Z. Times. A abort while! ago the Times assured PaJptua that if they returned Mr Hi’srkihs, the constituency would be practically unrepresented, since it wdijffd not be able to obtain anything likp the roads and bridges that could be got if a Government candidate was returned. Arguments of this sort detracted from rather than added to the chances of the Government, and rightly so. For our part we should be indeed reluctant to admit that the Government would make such an unfair distinction as this. If however, wiiat the Times states is true, the lesson will not be lost sight of by the electors at the coming general election.
Mr Hawkins is to be commended for the straightforward manner in which he conducted the business of the election, and we have every confidence that he will prove a very capable successor to the late Mr O’Meara.
