Fire.
Last night at about 9.30 o’clock the i'esiifenl* of the t-Own wore roused i::to a state of excitement by the loud pealing of our firebell. A four-roonud cottage in Unionsferoet, cccupudl by Mr J. Reid, and otfned by Mr Andresen, was totally destroyed as the result of the fire-fiend. ■ Uw the fire originated is ;i inytil orv, as the inmates of the house had biam out since three o’clock in Ihc afternoon, and had not returned when the fire broke out. A first arrival, who made an entry by breaking open the front door, is of the opinion that the fire started in a bedroom, but such a strong bold bad been obtained that any efforts to save the building would have been useless. The loss to Mr Reid will be considerable, the only articles saved being a piano, and a table. , | It is fortunate there wad not' 1 Any , wind, aa probably the adjoining buildings occupied by M#s A. Baker and Mr Andresen, would also have suffered destruction. There was no insurance. We learn that Mr Reid with his family intended during the course of a week or so removing to the Auckland district to reside.
