THE BEACH ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU HERALD. Sir, —With your kind permission I would like to draw the attention of the Manawatu County Council, also our local Borough Council, to the very bad state of the road to the beach. We Poxtonians are a patient and long-suffering people, but I do think we should rouse ourselves up little bit and see that this very necessary.piece of road is attended to by the County Council. I would further draw their attention to the fact that they have been pocketing the rates from this district for the last 30 years or more, and all the County Council has done has been the formation of one mile of road—namely, from the boundary of the borough road to the end of the clay cutting—amounting to the magnificent sum of £73, including £lO for survey, at the same time our borough baa metalled up to their boundary, and which the County Council should have continued towards the beach. Now, Sir, I do think our new Mayor should take this matter up and show that he has the go in him that he promised when asking us to vote for him. He is often near Sandon and most probably may meet many of the members of the County Council, he could just bring them along to have a look for themselves, or I would suggest that the Foxton Borough take over this piece of work from the County, with a certain amount of rateable property adjoining the beach road, and spend the rates in repairing the same Ido not know whether you are aware of the fact, but allow me to state that the Manawatu Railway Company holds 10,000 acres of land almost adjoining the above road—a gift from the Government. Now I would suggest that the County hand over the rates of the above to our local authorities and let them look after the road. Being on the spot they could give more attention than the County Council 20 miles away. I doubt if there’s two members in the County Council that have actually seen this road, or know where it is. I hope the matter will be taken up earnestly by our councillors for it concers our township’s prosperity much more than it does the Manawatu County Council. I am, &c., Eirruf, Y.C. Foxton, 24th June, 1904.
