THE KINCHAU BATTLE. General Kuropatkin reports that a Japanese battalion of infantry and a squadron of cavalry on Wednesday advanced on the main road to Liaoyang, but were soon compelled to retire to Tythonmonze. Another battalion of infantry occupied the heights of Villa Dapu, in the valley of Aiho. Continuous skirmishing is proceeding with Cossacks. Tokio despatches assert that the Russian losses at Kinchau are estimated at 2000. The forts at the junction of Dalny and Port Arthur lines have been seized, and the assault on Dalny commenced. Official reports received at Washington on the power of Japanese shiraose powder shows that the force is terrific, piercing the heaviest ar mour. Shells with a small cavity are rent into a thousand sharp fragments which pierce even, steel ob structions like machine gun projectiles.
