Murder and Suicide.
A YOUNG MAORI COUPLE. Details of the tragedy up the Wanganui river showed that ir, occurred at Pungarohu. ■Tiwha and his wife were sleeping in a whare with another native(lloue) and his wife (.lain). £t about three o’clock on Saturday
morning the latter were aroused by the deceased couple quarrelling. Suddenly the woman ran across the whare and threw herself on the other two as they lay clown. The woman was bleeding profusely from a cut in her throat. Hone jumped up and caught hold of Tiwha, who held a bloody razor in his hand. The former was thrown to the ground and then ran out for assistance. After he left, Tiwha again attacked bis wife and killed her. Hata rushed to the rescue and id the struggle with the murderer the latter out her hand with a razor and bit her finger. She then rushed from the whare, meeting her husband and uncle. On returning to the whare they found Tiwha, outside, with his throat also cut and dying. Tiwha was 24 years of age and his wife 19. Their throats were cut almost from ear to ear. The whare was covered in blood and is described by the police as like a shambles. Jealousy was evidently the cause of the tragedy, the murderer not caring to see his wife leave him, even holding her by the Hand as they walked. At the inquest a verdict was returned that the woman met her death at the hands of her husband while temporarily insane and the latter committed suicide while temporarily insane.
