Sly-grog Selling.
The Magistrate delivered judgment at Ashburton on Friday morning in the sly grog selling cases as following:—■ J. W. Malaoimson f commission agent, was fined £25 ; Alex. McKenzie, bookmaker, £3O; Alf. Bray, sodawater manufacturer, £45; Thos. Alexander, billiard saloon keeper, £3O; Robert Shields, boardinghousekeeper, £3O; D. T. Todd, reporter, £3O; John Robb, of Winslow, £3O. Judgment was_ reserved in the Elizabeth Hitchings case. The cases against Dinnen, Logan, Nealon, Milaon, and Hyland were dismissed, principally on the ground that there was no corroborative evidence to that supplied by the informers. In Dinnen’s case the Magistrate recommended the police to bring under the notice of the Railway Department the extraordinary amount of liquor consumed at a wedding on defendant’s premises. The liquor in the convicted cases was ordered to be confiscated and in the dismissed cases returned. The Magistrate refused to make an order for costs.
