The Newspaper Press Directory.

FIFTY-NINTH ANNUAL ISSUE, 1904. “The Newspaper Press Directory” for 1904, published by Messrs C. Mitchell and Co., the well-known advertising agents, 1 and 2, Snow Hill, London, is the fifty-ninth annual edition of a comprehensive work of reference relating to the press throughout the world. It supplies, in the first place, a complete guide to the newspaper press of the United Kingdom, the British colonies and dependencies, with suggestive data affording a useful insight into the relative value of these publications as advertising media, the whole presented in a form easily available for reference. It also contains a wealth of information, which must be invaluable to British exporters and the commercial classes, as well as to advertisers generally. In several respects it goes much beyond the ordinary scope of a directory. It includes special articles by Writers of recognised authority dealing with the dominant topic of the hoar—the much-discussed subject of Tariff Reform. Mr Ernest E. 'Williams, in a buoyant spirit, outlines 44 The Progress towards Commercial Union of the Empire,” and shows what a remarkable advance the propaganda of fiscal reform has made since he, seven years ago, began to advocate in the pages of the Directory the need of a closer Union of the Empire. Sir Horace Tozer, K.C.M.G, Agent-General for Queensland, writes upon “Australia and the Imperiaf Fiscal Problem,” while “A Cape Journalist” voices South African views upon the same subject. In addition, there appears a valuable contribution upon the newly-formed South African Customs Union, explaining its scope and the special advantage the British exporter will derive under the preferential regime accorded to the motherland by her South African kinsmen. There are also articles dealing with the progress of the Canadian Dominion, the Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand, the East and West Indies, South Africa and other colonies, during 1902-3, especially with reference to the import trade of each of these over-sea possessions. As a work of reference, the Directory takes high rank and should find a place in the office of every advertiser, and also of all having business relations with the colonies and India.
