Manawatu County Council.

Arrears of rates were £llß 19s Bd, tramway accounts in arrear, £419 17s Id. On the tramway account a total of £BB9 9s lOd was paid out of revenue for sleepers, rails, fastenings, etc. MISCELLANEOUS. A circular was received relative to the amounts now being raised in the colony in connection with H.M.S. New Zealand. The Chairman said he would be glad to subscribe but thought that it was not legal for the Council to subscribe. Eventually, i Mr Purnell was appointed to take charge of a subscription list in aid of the fund. ‘ Mr Mitchell, overseer to the Council, sent in his resignation, and ; intends following the farming industry. The resignation was ac- , oepted with regret. The chairman said Mr Mitchell had always done very satisfactory work and the Council wished him success in his new venture. It is understood Mr Mitchell has purchased a property at Bunnythorpe. Replying, Mr Mitchell thanked the council for the kindly expression of feeling and also for appreciation of his work. He had always understood his work had been favourably received by the council but it was impossible to please everyone outside and that W'as partly the reason he was leaving.
