St. Patrick’s Day Sports and Picnic Club.

A general meeting of the above club was held at Mr Levett’s Hotel on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. There was a good attendance of members and Mr Simpson was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The balance-sheet as read was adopted, and showed a surplus of £g ns 6d. A further donation of £i IS from Messrs Langley Bros., and 53 from Mr A. Osborne were gratefully ackowledged, making the total cash in hand £io 17s 6d, The net receipts were £45 14s and the expenditure £34 16s 6d. -j A long discussion followed what should be done with the surplus, and it was proposed and seconded that the whole amount should be banked; As an amendment, it was proposed that the amount be banked in the names of Messrs G. Simpson, R. Noon* an, and the secretary and treasurer, the said four gentlemen to have power to withdraw £3 3s and give the same, to the Foxton Athletic Club as soon as the contemplated improvements to the Victoria Park bicycle track were effected, not before. The motion was withdrawn in favor of the amendment, which on being put to the meeting, was carried unanimously. Owing to his leaving the district Mr Spring handed in his resignation as co-secretary of the club, which was accepted with regret. The usual courtesy to the chair and to Mr Levett for the use of the room terminated the meeting.

Alter the close of the above proceedings, the Chairman said he Ijad a very pleasant duty to perform. He said it was gratifying to all concerned to see the substantial credit balance which the above club have over from their initial meeting, which was no doubt due to a great extent to the energy displayed by the secretaries, and as one of them was severing his connection with the club and going from amongst us to a new sphere of labour, he would ask Mr Spring to accept a slight token of the respect and esteem with which he is held by his fellow members of the St. Patrick’s Day Sports and Picnic Club, who one and ail regretted his departure yet unanimously joined in wishing him success wherever he should go, and he (the chairman) now had the pleasure of presenting Mr Spring with a silver mounted cigarette holder, and agate pendant, mounted with gold. In reply, the recipient said that the presentation was quite unexpected and came as a great surprise to him. He was very pleased to think that his small assistance to the club had met with their approval, and although he was going away he would always think of the members of the club he was leaving behind with tender feelings and hoped they would continue in the good work they had begun—providing sport and recreation for the children—and that the club and its members individually would meet with every success and prosperity in the future, Mr Spring said he was sorry he was going away, but be considered the situation offered to him on the staff of the Wairarapa Standard was one that would be to his advantage, otherwise he would not have accepted it. In conclusion he again thanked the many friends he was leaving behind for their nice presents and expressions of good-will, and hoped that the good feeling at present existing amongst the members of the St. Patrick’s Day Sports and Picnic Club would continue to prevail.
