The Levin-Greatford Railway.

The proposal in regard to the Levin-Greatford railway, brought forward by R. B McKenzie a month ago, came up for consideration at the Rangitikei County Council meeting last Saturday. The Chairman was not convinced of the urgent necessity of the line, and thought it was useless to support what was considered a hopeless question. He was satisfied from his own judgment there were many other lines which required to be established in opening up the back country. He would favour spending money in opening up the Wairarapa district and improving the railway at Rimutakn. To make the Greatford-Levin line would practically he duplicating a railway already in existence. Certainly it would run through new country, but the traffic from that locality went by the existing railway and at the Foxton port. He believed the Foxton people would be against the proposal, because it would materially affect their shipping business. Or Fraser said he was a ratepayer in the Manawatu County, but would not support any proposals for new railway lines, until the completion of the Main Trunk to Auckland. The remarks of both speakers met with the approval of other councillors, and no action was taken in the matter.—Advocate.
