Two Men Drowned.
ATTEMPTED TO SWIM A FLOODED RIVER. News was received at Carterton on Saturday which leads to the be* lief that two young men, Harry Cadwallader and Owen Udy, were drowned on Friday night whilst at* tempting to swim their horses across the Ruamahunga river. They left the Bush Hotel for Poratahi, where they had a metalling contract near the residence of Mr James Wall, at 3 p.m, on Friday. On Saturday morning their horses were found on the river bank, but there was np trace of the men.
It ia supposed that the young fellows attempted to take a short Poratahi and tried to cross *PRTriver where there was no ford. On Friday morning the Ruamahunga did not show any signs of being affected by the rain, but it rose suddenly in the afternoon, and at the spot near where the horses were found, it was running half a mile wide. Harry Cadwallader is a single man, 29 years of age, and born in Carterton. He is well-known in athletic and sporting circles, and is a prominent Wairarapa representative footballer, and with Tilson Bros., is recognised as one of the best horsemen in the district. Tidy is 19 years of ago, and a son of Mr John Udy, of South Carterton. The body of Udy was recovered on Sunday, covered with silt, only a portion of one foot being visible.
